The SENIOR LEAD OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER candidate is to perform the following functions:
Generate/propose fiber optic network engineering designs and architectures
Generate/review methods of procedures and standard operating procedures used in fiber optic cable system operations and sustainment activities
Generate and maintain system engineering documentation to guide acquisitions and acceptance activities (including providing design and test objectives)
Review and assess third-party support agreements and statements of work
Contribute to Cost Estimates, Affordability Analysis, Analysis of Alternatives, Courses of Action, and other system engineering artifacts
Able to support occasional travel (15% est.)
Participate in integrated project teams supporting system development
The SENIOR LEAD OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER candidate has the following characteristics:
A M.S. degree in a related STEM field
10 years of experience in submarine and/or terrestrial fiber optic cable systems or related areas
Familiarity with fiber-optic transmission design principles and how they are reflected in transmission and amplifier equipment design
Prior experience with several of the critical subsystems (E.g., fiber, cable, repeaters, power feed equipment, line terminal equipment, etc.)
An understanding of transmission performance penalties and margin budgets
Experience in translating performance requirements into system (or subsystem) production, test, and operational requirements
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Familiarity with control plane functionality, including the use of Craft Terminals, Element/Network Management Systems, the use of overhead or wayside channels, etc.
Familiarity with the properties of key optical elements within system line terminal equipment, such as multiplexers/demultiplexers, repeaters, branching units, reconfigurable optical add/drops, etc.
Prior hands-on use (I.e., installation, operations, maintenance, provisioning) of submarine line terminal equipment a plus
General knowledge of optical transponder functionality and communications protocols supported (E.g., 10GE, OTN, FEC, etc.)
Prior leadership of small development teams in related system or subsystems helpful
Experience with gauging the performance of systems using common industry metrics (E.g., Q-factor, BER, OSNR, etc.)
The candidate is required to be a U.S. Citizen and to have a top secret security clearance at commencement of work. Candidates with existing clearances are preferred, but clearance sponsorship can be considered. Candidates in the work site region are preferred, but relocation can be considered. Also, the candidate is expected to adhere to all COVID-related rules and practices associated with vaccinations, reporting, etc. that are required by State and Federal officials.
